A relatively standard week of training up until 6:15AM Saturday morning. Feeling good on a ten mile pre-practice run. So good in fact i started daydreaming and took my fosus off the train. A crackling sound and a wrenched ankle. I tried running on it afterwards as sometimes I can, but noticed a limp.
Plan were to resume on Sunday with a long aquafog, but woke up with a tweaked back.
Feeling much better as of today (monday) and plan to hit the pool tomorrow and resume with the running on Wednesday.
Happy Trails,
Kiley

6-21-09 Last weeks training How not Why?
M - Rest
T - 4 Miles Old Mt' Wilson Trail
W - 5 Miles RB Trails
R - 4 Miles RB Trails (informal meet up w/ TEAM)
F - Rest
Sat - 13 Lucky Miles
Sun - 10 Miles
This week turned out to be a step back week. That's a good thing as that what it should have been. I've been gradually building for two weeks and planned on continuing with a bigger weekend capped with a 20 mile run on mountain trails with friends. Saturday afternoon my car crapped out thwarting my Sunday plans. Saturday night I realized that I really should take it easy on Sunday.
Sunday's run took me on trails close to home. Thought about many things on the run and being Father's Day my Dad was on my mind. Feeling disgusted with my car situation I wondered what advice my Dad would give. The car crapped out most likely due to my lack of care and not checking fluids. I may pay big time for this one. This at a time when cash is tight.
I found myself initially asking "why can I decide to take on long races, train with discipline, sacrifice, actually get to the finishline, yet when it comes to other important areas of my life I fall way too short?" Is it even valuable to ask "why"? One can study and dissect their patterns, but does that actually lead to solutions? For me it has not. Perhaps a better approach is to ask "how". How seems to me to be a starting point for action. How can I improve my career? How can I change my living situation? How can I foster better relationships? How can I be more organized and rid my life of clutter?
When you go about setting forth with a training plan the first thing one does is write out a training plan. That's a how thing. You don't spend a lot of time sitting around asking why.

Last Weeks "Step Back" Training
Feeling better now, a bit more fresh. I think I'm getting back in the swing of things. The excitment I felt whith preparing for my first ultra has been replaced with a bit of fear of what lies ahead. In other words, I have an idea of what's coming. Mt. Disappointment: heat, steeper climbs and more technical trails. The more I think about it....the challenge is exciting.
M - Rest
T - 4 Miles Mt. Wilson Trail
W - 5 Miles RB Trails
R - Rest
F - Rest
Sat - 10 miles RB Trails
Sunday - 15 Miles Mt. D course (Strawberry Loop)
Strawberry Loop -
I parked my car at the Red Box Junction up Angeles Crest and proceeded down the Gabrielino Trail to Switzers. I noticed that the trails weren't as clear as the ones on the LD50 course. Lots of rocks and roots. Nothing too gnarley, but defintely requiring more care.
Switzers was full of Sunday picnic goers and revelers. Once at Swtizers I crossed the parking lot and made my way up the road towards the Crest. Just before Angeles Crest there's a side trail that takes you to Clear Creek Ranger Station. Here, I filled up my water bottle ate a Powerbar and studied my map.

From Clear Creek I crossed the Crest and made my way to Fire Road 2N64 also known as the Josephine Fire Road.

2.4 miles up to the saddle marked by zero shade and lots of yellow blossoms. Sunday there was a lot of cloud cover, but I don't expect this in August. Heat training will be par for the course.

View From The Saddle:

Leaving Josephine Saddle the run/scramble was more to my liking. Single track, nice views of the Big Tujunga and the back of Strawberry Peak. Strawberry is named so because from a distance the peak resembles a strawberry laying on its top.

Downhill to Strawberry Meadows. Beautiful down there. The backside of Strawberry reminds me of a mini Yosemite. Lots of huge boulders, erosion, and the force of nature in full display.

Climbing out of Strawberry to another saddle again affords nice vistas, but not on this day as I was in the clouds. Once at that last saddle it's all downhill back to the Crest, Red Box, and my car.

HAPPY TRAILS,
Kiley

Pushing too hard?
A lot of running / training this past week. Perhaps too much. Saturday and Sunday's trainings were tough. The body just didn't want to go. I think I need to step it back this week.
Monday - Coached LA Marathon 26 Miles
Thursday - 5 Miles (Rose Bowl Trails)
Saturday - 17 Miles (Rose Bowl area)
Sunday - 10 Miles
58 miles total/ Perhaps I over did it. Here's a vid from my Sunday training. It was beautiful up there. The Mt. Waterman area holds a special place in my heart. I have many fond memories of ski trips with my Dad on Mt. Waterman.
